As you review your pharmacist CE requirements, keep in mind that most renewal periods are 1-2 years, CE hours range state by state but are generally between 10-30 hours, and, depending on where you live, you may have more state-mandated CE requirements than other states.

State by State Pharmacist CE Requirements

Alabama Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every 2 years for Alabama pharmacist license renewal
    • 6 hours of live CE
    • 12 hours may be completed by home study
  • By Specialty
    • 2 hours of immunization for immunizing pharmacists
    • 2 hours of nuclear pharmacy for nuclear pharmacists
    • 6 hours for pharmacist consultants
    • 2 hours of preceptor training seminar for preceptors

Alaska Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Alaska pharmacist license renewal, all of which may be completed by home study
    • Pharmacists authorized to administer vaccines or related emergency medications are required 1 hour specific to this topic every two years.

Arizona Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Arizona pharmacist license renewal, all of which may be completed by home study
    • A minimum of 3 hours must be related to opioids every two years.
    • 2 hours of administering immunization, vaccines and emergency medications for immunizing pharmacists
    • 2 hours of tobacco cessation IF you prescribe and dispense these
    • 3 hours of self-administered hormonal contraceptives for pharmacists who dispense them

Arkansas Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Arkansas pharmacist license renewal
    • 12 hours of live CE

California Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for California pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of law and ethics provided by board
    • 1 hour of immunization and vaccines IF you immunize
    • 2 hours of travel medications IF you dispense
    • 1 hour of cultural competency
    • 10 hours of advanced practice pharmacists IF you’re one of these

Colorado Pharmacists

  • Required 24 hours every two years for Colorado pharmacist license renewal
    • 40 hours of clinical practice for pharmacists in a collaborative practice agreement

Connecticut Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for Connecticut pharmacist license renewal
    • A minimum of 1 hour must be in pharmacy or drug law each year
    • 5 hours of live CE
    • Must include immunization training IF you immunize

Delaware Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Delaware pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of administration of injectable medications, biologicals and adult immunizations IF you immunize
    • 2 hours of medication safety/errors
    • 2 hours of controlled substance distribution, dispensing or delivery or detection/recognition of symptoms, behavior patterns, impairment, dependency

Dist. Columbia Pharmacists

  • Required 40 hours every two years for District of Columbia pharmacist license renewal
    • 10 hours of live CE
    • 2 hours of Medication/Dispensing Errors
    • 2 hours of Cultural Competency or LGBTQ
    • 10% of total in subjects determined as public health priorities of the district by the Director
    • 2 hours of Immunization if certified by board to administer immunization or vaccinations

Florida Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Florida pharmacist license renewal
    • 10 hours of live CE
    • 1 hour of HIV/AIDS prior to first renewal
    • 2 hour of medication errors
    • 5 hour of risk Management
    • 2 hour sof validation and counseling of prescriptions for controlled substances and opioids
    • 3 hours of administration of vaccines and epinephrine autoinjection for pharmacists certified to administer a vaccine or epinephrine autoinjection
    • 2 hours of order and evaluating laboratory tests for consultant pharmacists and pharmacists hold a Doctor of Pharmacy degree
    • 8 hour of collaborative pharmacy practice-related issues for pharmacists participating in a CPA
    • 8 hour of administer a long-acting antipsychotic medication by injection for participating pharmacists
    • 3 hours of Minor, nonchronic health condition-related issues for participating pharmacists
    • If pharmacist is a:
      • Consulting pharmacist – 24 additional hours every two year
      • Nuclear pharmacist – 24 additional hours every two years

Georgia Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Georgia pharmacist license renewal
    • 1 hour of live in therapy area for pharmacists participating in drug modification therapy
    • 10 hours for pharmacists with a specialty pharmacy practice in each specific area of specialty

Hawaii Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Hawaii pharmacist license renewal

Idaho Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for Idaho pharmacist license renewal

Illinois Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Illinois pharmacist license renewal
    • 1 hour of implicit bias awareness
    • 1 hour of sexual harassment
    • 2 hours of immunization-related continuing pharmacy education approved by the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education if administering vaccines.

Indiana Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Indiana pharmacist license renewal

Iowa Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Iowa pharmacist license renewal, 27 month renewal period
    • 15 hours in drug therapy
    • 2 hours in pharmacy law
    • 2 hours in medication or patient safety
    • 1 hour of immunization for participating pharmacists
    • 1 hour for pharmacists ordering or administering a prescription drug, product, test, or treatment
    • 1 hour of opioid overdose and treatment for pharmacists participating in naloxone statewide standing order
    • 1 hour of influenza for pharmacists participating in point-of-care test and treat – Influenza statewide standing order
    • 1 hour of streptococcal infection for pharmacists participating in point-of-care test and treat – Strep A statewide standing order

Kansas Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Kansas pharmacist license renewal

Kentucky Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for Kentucky pharmacist license renewal
    • For licensing years 2023 through 2028, one (1) hour is required on the opioid epidemic or opioid use disorder.

Louisiana Pharmacists

  • 15 hours each year for Louisiana pharmacist license renewal
    • 3 hours of live or 5 hours of additional CE for a total of 20 hours
    • 1 hour of administration of medication for participating pharmacists
    • 5 hours of nuclear pharmacy CE for participating pharmacists

Maine Pharmacists

  • 15 hours each year for Maine pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of drug administration for participating pharmacist
    • 15 hours of CPA areas of practice for participating pharmacists
    • Complete department approved mandated reporter training once every 4 years

Maryland Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Maryland pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of vaccinations for ages 3 yrs and older for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of live CE
    • 1 hour of preventing medication errors
    • 4 hours of vaccinations for participating pharmacists
    • 1 hour of contraceptives for participating pharmacists

Massachusetts Pharmacists

  • Required 20 hours each year for Massachusetts pharmacist license renewal
    • 5 hours of live CE
    • 2 hours of Pharmacy Law
    • 5 hours of sterile compounding for participating pharmacists
    • 3 hours of complex non-sterile compounding for participating pharmacists
    • 1 hour of administration of vaccines for participating pharmacists
    • 5 hours of CTM areas of practice for participating pharmacists each year of agreement (additional hrs to required CE)
    • 12 hours of disease state management in each area credentialed for participating pharmacists (3 hrs each yr of agreement)

Michigan Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Michigan pharmacist license renewal
    • 10 hours of live CE
    • 1 hour of pharmacy ethics and jurisprudence
    • 1 hour of pain and symptom management
    • 1 hour of implicit bias
    • One-time human trafficking
  • CS License holders
    • Opioids and controlled substance awareness training

Minnesota Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Minnesota pharmacist license renewal

Mississippi Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for Mississippi pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of live CE
    • 2 hours of opioid abuse and prevention or other drug of abuse or addiction related issue

Missouri Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Missouri pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of administration of vaccines or CDC immunization guidelines for participating pharmacists
    • 6 hours of medication therapy management for participating pharmacists
    • 4 hours of blood-clotting factor concentrates, infusion treatment or therapy, or blood-clotting disorders or diseases for participating pharmacists

Montana Pharmacists

  • Required either 15 hours every year for Montana  pharmacist license renewal, with 0.5 CEU obtained in an approved contact/group hours or 20 CE hours every year if a pharmacist does not take at least 0.5 CEU in an approved contact/group program.

Nebraska Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Nebraska pharmacist license renewal

Nevada Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Nevada pharmacist license renewal
    • 1 hour of jurisprudence or by attending an entire day of any meeting of the board
    • 2 hours of life cycle of diseases, drugs and administration of immunizations for participating pharmacists or course by CDC regarding epidemiology and prevention of diseases which are preventable through immunization

New Hampshire Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for New Hampshire pharmacist license renewal
    • 10 hours of live CE
    • 3 hours in pain management and addiction disorder or a combination

New Jersey Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for New Jersey pharmacist license renewal
    • 10 hours of live CE
    • 3 hours of pharmacy law related to the practice of pharmacy in New Jersey
    • 1 hour of prescription opioid drugs, including alternatives to opioids for managing and treating pain and the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion
    • 2 hours of immunization for immunizing pharmacists
    • 10 hours of CDTM in the area covered by the CPA for participating pharmacists
    • 4 hours of self-administered hormonal contraceptives

New Mexico Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for New Mexico pharmacist license renewal
    • 10 hours of live CE
    • 2 hours of patient safety
    • 2 hours of Pharmacy law
    • 2 hours of Safe and appropriate use of opioids
    • 2 hours of Vaccines (must be Live) for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of Tobacco cessation drug therapy (must be Live) for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of Naloxone drug therapy (must be Live) for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of Hormonal contraception (must be Live) for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of Approved drug therapy for each category of POCT pharmacist exercised prescriptive authority in (must be live) for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of Pharmacist clinician related (10 of which must be live) for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of Responsible opioid prescribing practices for pharmacist clinician with a controlled substance registration to prescribe Schedule II and III controlled substances
    • 2 hours in HIV PEP therapy every 2 years for pharmacists participating in prescriptive authority for HIV PEP therapy

New York Pharmacists

  • Required 45 hours every three years for New York pharmacist license renewal
    • 23 hours of live CE
    • 3 hours ofmedication and/or prescription errors
    • 3 hours of compounding (Effective January 1, 2023)
    • 5 hours of CDTM in the area or areas related to any CDTM protocols for participating pharmacists

North Carolina Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for North Carolina pharmacist license renewal
    • 5 hours of live CE
    • 3 hours of disease states, drugs and vaccine administration for participating pharmacists
    • 35 hours of Practice relevant for CPP participating pharmacist

North Dakota Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for  North Dakota pharmacist license renewal

Ohio Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Ohio pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of pharmacy jurisprudence
    • 2 hours of patient or medication safety

Oklahoma Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for Oklahoma pharmacist license renewal
    • 3 hours of live CE (The Board encourages pharmacists to complete live CE but it is not required)
    • 1 hour immunization training

Oregon Pharmacists

  • Pharmacists are required 30 hours every two years for Oregon pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of pharmacy law
    • 2 hours of patient safety or medication error prevention
    • 2 hours of cultural Competency
    • 1 hour of pain management, provided by the Pain Management Commission of the Oregon Health Authority
    • 1 hour of travel medications if pharmacist provides service
    • 2 hours of tobacco cessation products if pharmacist provides service

For Licensure:1 hour of pain management, provided by the Pain Management Commission of the Oregon Health Authority

Pennsylvania Pharmacists

  • Pharmacists are required 30 hours every two years for Pennsylvania pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of administration of injectable medications, biologicals and immunizations for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of patient safety
    • 2 hours of child abuse recognition
    • 2 hours of pain management, identification of addiction or the practices of prescribing or dispensing of opioids

Rhode Island Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for Rhode Island pharmacist license renewal
    • 1 hour of law
    • 5 hours of live CE
    • 1 hour of immunization for participating pharmacists
    • 5 hours of areas of practice general related to CPAs for participating pharmacists

South Carolina Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for South Carolina pharmacist license renewal
    • 5 hours drug therapy or pain management
    • 6 hours of live
    • 1 hour of monitoring controlled substances listed in Schedules II, III and IV
    • 1 hour of administration of vaccinations for participating pharmacists
    • 1 hour of contraceptives for participating pharmacists

South Dakota Pharmacists

  • Required 12 hours each year for South Dakota pharmacist license renewal
    • 1 hour of immunization for participating pharmacists

Tennessee Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Tennessee pharmacist license renewal
    • 15 hours of live CE
    • 10 hours of topics related to clinical practice of pharmacy for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of controlled substance prescribing for pharmacists with current federal DEA license

Texas Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Texas pharmacist license renewal
    • 1 hour of pharmacy laws or rules
    • 2 hours of approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances (obtained no later than the first anniversary of becoming licensed to practice pharmacy)
    • 2 hours of compounding low and medium risk sterile preparations for participating pharmacists
    • 4 hours of compounding high risk sterile preparations for participating pharmacists
    • 3 hours of disease states, drugs, and administration of immunizations or vaccines for participating pharmacists
    • 3 hours of precepting for participating pharmacists
    • 6 hours of drug therapy (pharmacists engaged in drug therapy management)
    • 1 course on human trafficking prevention

Utah Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Utah pharmacist license renewal
    • 12 hours of live CE
    • 15 hours in one or more of the following: Disease state management-drug therapy, AIDS therapy, Patient safety or Immunizations
    • 1 hour of pharmacy law
    • 2 hours of vaccine related topics for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of administration of prescription drugs or devices for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours of hormonal contraceptives for participating pharmacists

Vermont Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Vermont pharmacist license renewal
    • 10 hours of live CE
    • 2 hours of administering immunizations for participating pharmacists
    • 2 hours related to controlled substances for pharmacists who have a registration number with the DEA or a pending application for a DEA number

Virginia Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for Virginia pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of live CE

Washington Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Washington pharmacist license renewal
    • 2 hours of health equity every 4 years

West Virginia Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for West Virginia pharmacist license renewal
    • 6 hours of live CE
    • 2 hours of drug diversion and best practice prescribing of controlled substance training
    • 2 hours of immunization for participating pharmacists each year (4 hrs each renewal period)
    • 3 hours of subjects of consulting practice for participating pharmacists each year

Wisconsin Pharmacists

  • Required 30 hours every two years for Wisconsin pharmacist license renewal

Wyoming Pharmacists

  • Required 15 hours each year for Wyoming pharmacist license renewal
    • 1 hour of immunization for participating pharmacists
    • 1 hour of responsible prescribing of controlled substances
